CURATOR: Laura Burkhalter, assistant curator

How will our everyday lives be different in 10, 20, or 50 years? The four artists in Meet the New You offer challenging meditations on this question, each presenting his or her unique version of a brave new world. Some works refer to specific scientific advances, while others deal more abstractly with the concepts of progress and perfection. Society’s constant struggle for perfection, for better or worse, is a major theme of the show.

Magnus Wallin often addresses issues of “outsiderness” and alienation in his work. Through his films and sculptures he continues to investigate themes of the body as a socio-political, cultural and historical vessel. With particular emphasis on physical anatomy and concepts of “normality” Wallin often takes his starting point from medical history.

With Synonym, specially made for the Skanstull underground station site, Wallin addresses the “outsider” directly and excludes the majority.  In this new work the protagonist communicates exclusively through sign language. The signing figure submerges and re-emerges in and out of water over the sequence of four screens, recounting an intimate narrative that few can decipher. The episode is filmed with an infrared camera giving the film an unusual color palate, as well as making the wet-suited and goggled figure more creature-like and alien.
